AFTER-SCHOOL CARE PROGRAM:

Participation and enrollment in our After-school Care Program is for the entire year. The annual fee will be divided over 10 months and billed monthly.

PROGRAM Information

The Montessori School of Maui was established in 1978.  From its humble beginnings in a Quonset hut in Haiku serving just 8 children, the school has evolved into an inspiring educational program on a lovely nine-acre campus in Makawao.  Currently, twelve classrooms, a multi-purpose facility, outdoor basketball court and central organic School Garden Classroom all combine with the tactile learning materials used in each classroom to meet the developmental needs of our student body, which includes children from 18 months through the 8th grade

The program delivered at Montessori School of Maui is based on the observations and philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori and is designed to meet a child’s individual needs while also developing their whole being.  MOMI is well designed to support and develop the child’s intellectual, social and emotional needs.  Dr. Montessori's strong belief in the need to "follow the child" is highly valued in the school’s culture and shapes the mission and values that exist in the greater community.

MOMI serves over 270 children, Toddler – Grade 8.  Montessori School of Maui maintains age spans of 18 mos – 3 years, 3 – 6 years, 6 – 9 years, 9 – 12 years, and 12 – 14 years because they support a child’s natural development among peers and they provide opportunities to progress at an appropriate rate. 

Montessori School of Maui is committed to providing an academically challenging curriculum in an emotionally nurturing environment for the children it serves.  The curriculum offerings include language arts, mathematics, science and cultural studies, Spanish, art, vocal and instrumental music, creative movement, Hawaiian Studies, and Living Arts which occurs in the school garden.  Recent work on curriculum to ensure systematic process and alignment across levels and programs lends itself to ensuring child readiness within our comprehensive curriculum.

The teacher’s role in the prepared environment is one of facilitator.  Children are provided with opportunities to be active participants in their education while being unfettered by strict guidelines or rote learning.  Assignments involve a great deal of hands-on learning, use of manipulatives to develop a concrete understanding of key concepts, and a move toward abstraction in the later years.  Each Montessori credentialed teacher uses specially developed albums, self-created materials, and pupil performance objectives to guide them and to ensure a well-rounded experience for all children.

Children are assessed regularly through teacher observation, individualized learning and as they mature, group projects.  Teachers complete narrative conference reports and participate with the parents in formal conferences at least twice yearly.  Teachers build strong relationships with parents by considering parents’ suggestions and concerns while also educating and supporting them in effective, nurturing child-rearing practices.

Conflict resolution and community building skills are practiced throughout all levels through empathy education, conversation, and expectations expressed through our Student Contract, an initiative to promote the growth of our student community through 1) the development of a strengthened partnership between home and school, 2) each child’s acknowledgement of and intentions for maintaining specific ideals that support community growth, and 3) the staff’s willingness to be held to the same understanding.  This on-going work gives the children skills to understand others’ points of view and resolve conflicts.  Supporting and empowering the children nurtures their emotional and social needs.  Teachers encourage children to express and work through their feelings.  Montessori School of Maui respects the needs of the children to be active problem solvers and masters of their own learning.

The quality of our program is best defined when looking at enrollment and admissions data, including the Parent Satisfaction Survey sent annually.  Most recently, a student retention rate of 89% was calculated across all programs.  As of the conclusion of the 2017-2018 school year, 78% of our parent body completed the survey, an increase of 34% over 2016-2017.  Of those surveyed, 96% feel that the school supports academic excellence and 97% feel the school promotes a love of learning among its students.

By preparing an environment where children are intellectually challenged and provided the opportunity to freely explore at developmentally appropriate rates, Montessori School of Maui fosters individual growth, problem-solving abilities, personal responsibility, creativity, and a sense of belonging.  There is a strong sense of personal ownership for tasks and love of work, balanced by a cooperative spirit, which translates to joy for the children who attend and for the families and staff who support them.
