and Norma Barton
Last spring, we had the pleasure of working with Cynthia Winans-Burns, our former head of school, to pay tribute to her legacy of work and passion at the Montessori School of Maui. Together, we identified an honorary space, naming our garden “The Living Classroom.” The quote, “Practice Compassion. Nurture Life.” was given to us by Cynthia to capture her intention for the garden classroom and for all of our students who experience the joy of learning within the space. Over the break, we were able to post her lovely plaque on the lower entrance to the garden for all to see and enjoy.
At the same time, we were able to honor the work of Cynthia’s mother, Norma Barton, who founded the library at our school. Her plaque has been hung on the outer wall of the library, formally naming this treasured space after its founder.
Our children will continue to enjoy these educational spaces for years to come and it is our honor to pay tribute to the work of these two Montessori pioneers.
