ON CAMPUS SAFE HAVEN PROCEDURES
I. Lock Down
This procedure is used when there is an immediate and imminent threat to the school population. School staff and students are secured in the rooms they are currently in and no one is allowed to leave until the situation has been curtailed. This is most commonly used when there is an intruder. The following will occur:
- In this order: The Head of School, Business Manager, Assistant to the Head of School or, if time allows the whole Emergency Management Team, will authorize the Lock Down
- Lock Down will be announced via One Long Blast the air horn system.
- MEMT will call 911.
- Lock down maps for each room are posted on the wall next to the evacuation map
- Teachers/staff secure doors, turn out lights, cover windows, pull shades and move students out of the line of sight of doors and windows to the designated safe area.
- Anyone outside and office or classroom should proceed to the nearest safe area
- Teachers/staff take attendance and record students that are in the room, extra students from other classrooms that are in your classroom, and note missing students.
- Keep the students calm and as quiet as possible
- Turn on walkie-talkies to low volume and await further instructions
- DO NOT OPEN DOORS FOR ANYONE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES EXCEPT for the Head of School, Business Manager, other MEMT Members or Local Authorities
- MEMT will notify off campus field trips to go to a safe haven until further notice
II. Shelter In
When conditions warrant, local officials may instruct individuals to stay inside and possibly in a protected area. Follow the above Lock Out Procedure; wait for instructions from the MEMT over the walkie-talkies.
