Behavioral Incidents

Bullying, Harassment, Physical Contact, Inappropriate Touching

 

PROCEDURE

The Montessori School of Maui follows the following procedures for staff members when an alleged or observed child to child bullying, harassment, physical contact, or inappropriate touching has been reported.  Our staff is required to treat all matters with confidentiality, only revealing information to those who have a genuine need to know about the specific matter.  It is MOMI’s general policy is to inform parents or legal guardians if their child has been involved in an incident or alleged incident. The following is the school’s procedure for reported incidents:

1.      Report the incident to the Head of School immediately. If the Head of School is not on campus, report the incident to the Department Coordinator and Safety Officer.

2.      Complete and submit the MOMI “Incident/Accident/Biohazard Exposure Report”

§  This document will include the names of children,  nature of the incident, names of the adults informed

3.      The Head of School will do the following:

§  Gather information regarding the incident

§  Confer with child’s teacher

§  The Teacher and/or the Head of School will inform both sets of parents

§  The Head of School, Dept. Coordinator or Safety Officer will inform all staff members by email and give pertinent instructions as appropriate. 

Examples of instructions:

o   All staff will heighten their observation level and monitor interactions between children

o   When warranted, teachers will document the daily activities of all students involved

o   A child who is an initiator will be visually supervised throughout the day.  Supervision may be ongoing, as necessary; to ensure that there is always an adult with the child.

o   Teachers will instruct individual children regarding appropriate behaviors and responses

o   Teacher(s) will instruct whole classes regarding behaviors as necessary

§  The Head of School will provide verbal follow up and/or discussion, as necessary, during Dept. Meetings, Teacher Meetings, Assistant Meetings and All Staff Meetings

4. “Good Touch Bad Touch,” or similar program, is offered to all of our students annually.
