Medical Requirements and Health

In accordance with the Hawaii Department of Health requirements, children may not be admitted to the school until their medical form H-14, signed by a physician, is on file at school. Immunizations or a State of Hawaii exemption must be current and on file in the administrative office.  All students must have a TB clearance. Please see Enrollment Process in Section 6, page 5 for more information.  School is a place for healthy children. Home is the best place for sick children.  Please call the school office if your child will be absent due to illness. In compliance with the Dept. of Health regulations, we cannot accept your child at school with active cold symptoms, such as nasal congestion, coughs or sneezes.  Children who experience diarrhea and/or vomiting are required to be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.  Children who have had a temperature (99.6 or above) are required to have a normal temperature (98.6 or below) for 24 hours before returning to school. Children, who are symptomatic, regardless of temperature, will be asked to stay home from school.  The school reserves the right to make the final decision if a child should stay home due to illness or injury.  All parents will appreciate our goal of keeping contagion and illness to a minimum.  Please make us aware of any contagious diseases so that we can notify other parents as soon as possible. Upon recovery from a contagious disease, a doctor's written release is required prior to a child’s return to school.  The Toddler teacher will provide “Medical Requirements and Health” information that is more specific to that classroom environment to parents at the beginning of the school year.  Should your child contract chicken pox, ukus, scabies, impetigo, ring worm or any other contagious ailment and it is noted at school, parents will be notified immediately and asked that the child remain out of school until the disease is treated and no longer contagious. For the health and safety of all, we ask the cooperation of all families in this matter.

Only prescribed medication may be brought to school for administration by a staff member.  Medication must be handed to the staff member by the parent. Medication must be in its original container with the physician's specific instructions.  The parent and the physician prescribing the medication must sign an authorization form allowing a staff member to administer the medication. Please do not send medication to school with your child in his/her lunch container. The first dose of any medication must be administered at home in case of an allergic reaction.

The Montessori School of Maui maintains an “Uku and Nit Free” policy.

§       Students are checked for ukus on a weekly basis.

§       Students found to have ukus) and/or nits will be removed from the classroom and parents will be notified to immediately to pick-up their child.

§       Students will not be allowed to return to school until they have been successfully treated and are uku and nit free.

§       Students sent home will need to be rechecked by office staff before being allowed to return to the classroom.  If a student still has ukus or nits at the recheck, he/she will be sent home again to be treated.
